Sheffield United Women 1-2 Everton Women: Early double enough despite late scare

Everton Women made it three wins out of three in the WSL Players Cup group stage, holding off a stoppage-time Sheffield United rally to win 2-1 at the Attis Arena on Wednesday night.

Rosa van Gool put Everton ahead inside eight minutes, and Noémie Mouchon doubled the lead shortly after on 14 minutes, giving the visitors a two-goal cushion before the game had even settled. Sheffield United, who had struggled for results in the competition, couldn't find a way back until deep into added time, when Lucy Willis - who had only just come off the bench - pulled one back in the 90th+1 minute to set up a nervy finish, but it was too little too late for the home side.

There were no cards shown in the match, with both sides' discipline kept intact throughout. Everton made good use of their bench, with Yuka Momiki, Ornella Vignola, Mayumi Pacheco, Amy Pracy and Divine Obida all introduced across the second half as the visitors managed the game, while Sheffield United also rang the changes looking for a way back in, Willis among the substitutes who made an impact.

The result leaves Everton on nine points from three games in Group A of the WSL Players Cup, sitting fourth, while Sheffield United remain bottom of the group having now taken just two points from three outings with a solitary draw to their name. It continues an excellent run for the Blues in this competition, who have now won their last three Women's League Cup games on the spin.

Everton's win continues a promising cup campaign that stands in contrast to a mixed run domestically, where they sit seventh in the Women's Super League. Wednesday's victory will nonetheless have been a welcome confidence boost ahead of their next assignment, with the early goals from van Gool and Mouchon doing the damage before Sheffield United's late rally merely made for an anxious final few minutes.
