Everton v Newcastle United live: score, updates and line-ups

Full time: Everton 3-1 Newcastle United. Goals from Garner, Hackney and Barry in a devastating first-half-and-counter-attacking display put Everton firmly in control, despite Newcastle dominating possession and racking up 28 shots to Everton's 11. Dan Burn's late header from Willock's cross gave the visitors some reward for their second-half pressure, but it proved only a consolation as Pickford and his defence held firm. Everton progress to the next round of the Carabao Cup with a thoroughly deserved win built on clinical finishing.

Newcastle finally get the goal their late pressure deserved - Dan Burn heads home from close range after Joe Willock's cross to make it 3-1 with two minutes left. It caps a dominant spell of possession and chances for the visitors, though Everton's lead still looks comfortable heading into stoppage time.

Thierno Barry puts the game to bed with a superb strike into the top corner, finishing off a fast break set up by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to make it 3-0. Newcastle have continued to press since, with Pickford twice called into action to deny Hall and Elanga, but Everton's lead looks unassailable.

Newcastle have made the brighter start to the second half after three changes at the break, piling on pressure and edging possession for the first time in the match. Pickford has had to be alert, saving well from Murphy and then a Wissa header, while Dan Burn also nodded over from a corner and Dedic has had a couple of efforts blocked. Despite all that territory, Everton's 2-0 lead remains intact as the visitors search for a way back in.

Everton pull further clear right before the break - Hackney finishes off a swift counter after Barry's cross, doubling the lead moments after Pickford had to deny Barnes from range. Everton go in at half-time well on top at 2-0.

Everton break the deadlock! James Garner slots home from the left side of the box after good work from Hayden Hackney, giving the hosts a deserved 1-0 lead after dominating possession. Newcastle have had their moments but Everton's control is now being rewarded on the scoreboard.

Newcastle had a bright spell with Willock and Schär both forcing good saves out of Pickford in quick succession, but Everton have since taken control again. Barry's close-range header was well kept out by Hornícek, and Dibling and Garner have both tested the visitors' goal since, while Everton's possession share has climbed sharply to around 64%. Osula's shot being blocked was Newcastle's main contribution in response, and the game paused briefly for treatment to the striker.

Even start at Hill Dickinson Stadium with both sides having early sight of goal but neither able to break the deadlock. Everton's best moment came through Dewsbury-Hall's blocked effort and a Tyrique George chance that drifted wide, while Newcastle have grown into it, with Pickford needing to save Harvey Barnes's header and Schär glancing one just over soon after. It's finely balanced, with Newcastle edging the shot count but Everton holding slightly more of the ball.
