Newcastle United v Everton live: score, updates and line-ups

Full time at St. James' Park: Newcastle 0-1 Everton. Thierno Barry's close-range finish from a set piece, confirmed after a VAR check, proved decisive in a game that swung late on as Newcastle, chasing an equaliser, were reduced to ten men when substitute Jacob Ramsey picked up two yellow cards in the space of two second-half stoppage-time minutes. Eight minutes of added time were played at the end, during which Fabian Schär and Brennan Johnson also saw yellow, but Everton held firm to take all three points despite Newcastle edging possession and shots overall.

Disaster for Newcastle in the chaos of stoppage time - Jacob Ramsey, on as a substitute, is shown a second yellow for a foul on Hackney and is sent off, leaving the hosts down to ten men as they chase an equaliser. Everton now look well placed to see out the 1-0 win at St. James' Park.

Newcastle have pushed hard for a leveller in the closing stages, with Osula heading narrowly wide from Murphy's cross and Wissa forcing a save out of Pickford from distance. Everton have held firm through a string of substitutions, with Johnson flagged offside after coming on, and the visitors still lead 0-1 as the game heads into its final minutes at St. James' Park.

Newcastle have really come alive since the restart, with Hornícek a key figure in keeping Everton at bay through smart saves from Dewsbury-Hall and O'Brien, while at the other end Elanga crashed a shot against the post and Wissa headed narrowly wide after coming off the bench. Everton still edge the overall attempts count but Newcastle's double substitution has sparked a strong spell, and a flurry of corners and half-chances at both ends has made for an end-to-end finish. It's still Newcastle 0-1 Everton with a quarter of an hour left plus stoppage time to find another goal.

Everton continue to press after Barry's goal, with Branthwaite nearly doubling the lead when his header was saved by Hornícek, before Tyrique George picked up a yellow card. Newcastle have responded through Elanga and Schär, with the latter firing two efforts off target from outside the box, but it remains Newcastle 0-1 Everton at St. James' Park.

Newcastle have rallied strongly before the break, turning possession around and matching Everton's attempts with efforts from Willock, Barnes and Joelinton, though all were blocked or off target. Dan Burn picked up a yellow card for a foul on Barry, and Everton still had the better of a late flurry through Dewsbury-Hall and Garner, but neither keeper has had to make a save. It's still goalless at St. James' Park heading into half-time.

Everton have continued to dominate possession and territory, piling on four more attempts since the last update through Röhl, Barry (twice) and George, though none have found the target yet. Newcastle have been pegged back and are yet to register a shot in this spell, with Joelinton and Hornícek both giving away free kicks as the home side struggle to get out of their half. Still 0-0 at St. James' Park, but Everton are firmly in the ascendancy.

Still goalless at St. James' Park with both sides creating half-chances but nothing testing either keeper yet. Everton have had more of the ball and early sight of goal through Garner and Dewsbury-Hall, but Newcastle finished the spell on top, winning a corner that Dan Burn headed narrowly wide. Plenty of free kicks being won by both teams, though referee hasn't needed to show any cards.
